NEVER SEEN A QUARTERBACK IN A BEARS UNIFORM

Bears seem to get a real quarterback in the amount of time it takes Haley’s comet to show itself in the skies. That’s every 17 years so that can’t be right. Would the eclipse be a better measuring stick? Probably not because Sid Luckman played in the 40’s. Jim McMahon helped win Chicago’s only Superbowl in the 80’s. You ever notice some people go through cars like underwear? While some people have had two cars in the same period of time that still look brand new like they were just driven off the show room floor. Since Jim McMahon, the Bears have had a hard time filling his shoes, while Green Bay has had the position behind the center cemented. Look at all the clunkers and total wrecks the Bears had to tow or send outright to the junk yard. All while Green Bay is driving a premo sports car that has just been waxed for another division title.

Since Jim McMahon was traded to the San Diego Chargers, the Chicago Bears have had a list of players behind center longer than Santa Clause’s naughty and nice list. Jim McMahon was the last Bears quarterback to make it to the pro bowl. Since 1989 we had some good quarterbacks that had some pretty good years. I loved Eric Kramer, Kyle Orton and Jim Miller. We even made it to the playoffs a few times.

We even made the Super Bowl with good Rex and bad Rex in the same year. How we missed Lovie Smith saying week after week that Rex Grossman is still our quarterback. It was like that toy you pull the string and the cow says moo. They had all the farm animals on this toy with each saying what the animal says.  Lovie’s string would be “Rex is still our quarterback.”

But all the garbage we had to sit and watch week after week. Year after year. From Cade McNown stealing people’s handicap placards. Then that hack Jonathan Quinn who was collecting pay checks for years until he finally got on the field. He was like that guy from Unnecessary Roughness telling the ref to blow the whistle as defenders were chasing him. The great Rick Mirer in which we had a cow and then traded it away for some beans. Peter Tom Willis and that super smart guy Craig Krenzel who’s probably finding cures right now for cancer. Then washed up quarterbacks like Kordell Stewart, Chris Chandler and even David Krieg. Oh we had them all. While this was going on, Green Bay went from the Magic Man, Don Majkowski, to Brett Farve, the Aaron Rogers during that time period. Just makes you sick to the stomach thinking about it. We also did have Henry Burris which will not make me feel any better. Throughout the hard times of the Cutler experiment that continued to go wrong, finally a quarterback has emerged from North Carolina, Mitch Trubisky. It’s where the Chicago legend Michael Jordan came from.

Are we really going through with this Mike Glennon experiment? We paid big money for Glennon as we did not save big money at Menards for him. That’s a lot of cheddar we are paying for a bridge type quarterback. Hoyer would of been cheaper. He knew the system as he played here last year. We did not know the Bears would go after a quarterback in their first pick in the first round. Obviously Glennon did not know that either. I feel bad for Glennon. In Tampa Bay, he becomes the starter and then they draft Winston. Now in Chicago, Glennon has to be feeling the pressure of Mitch fever. He has to be waking up in cold sweats every night. Like he’s waiting on death row until the warden or the Coach says it’s time as Glennon will be toast and Mitch Trbisky will guide one of the oldest franchises back to glory.

Watching Mitch Trubisky throw that perfect pass to Tanner Gentry was something out of this world. In Chicago you’ve never seen a throw like that in a Bears uniform. Of course you would see your opponent do that to your defense. I don’t know how many times Bears corner backs have been on highlight reels. But it has always have been teams that have a quarterback. During the preseason I was amazed watching our young quarter back.  The precision passing. Getting the ball to receivers in stride. Pocket awareness. When to abort the mission. Most rookies will run if their main check down is covered. Mitch is eye balling the whole field looking at all options before he runs. He can throw on the run. He has showed some quickness with his feet. All the intangibles that make an excellent recipe for a great quarterback. Yes, Sid Luckman had all the greatness. We might be seeing the resurrection of the great Sid Luckman. I was not alive seeing that legend play. But of course I saw the bum Cutler break lots of his records. If Sid was around present times in a happy pass- friendly league his numbers would of been off the chart and no way a weasel like Cutler would of came close. Could Mitch be the next Luckman in Bears history?

Will Mitch be our starting quarter back this season with Glennon? After they drafted Mitch everyone from the papers, radio to the television and even people from their bar stool were saying Mitch has to sit the whole year and just learn. Now seeing him play, people’s eyeballs are popping out of their sockets and want him in pronto. Did Mitch get enough time with the number one team in preseason? Was he playing against enough number one units on defense when he came in? The beginning of the Bears schedule is brutal. You’re playing Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Minnesota, Baltimore, and Carolina. Many of these teams have solid defenses. I would not throw him out to the wolves. They should make him the number two though. No need to make the butt fumbler Sanchez your number two. Let Mitch soak in as much knowledge as he can from the sideline. I think Glennon will be better then any of the quarterbacks we had last year. I think he will be out to prove a lot because Mitch is on the sideline. I do not see Glennon having a winning record after the first six contests. I think patience is a virtue here as we waited so long for a quarterback to walk onto Soldier’s Field. We just don’t need to ruin his confidence early in the season where he might not get it back. This is the Chicago Bears we are talking about. They have never been this close to the sun. Let him learn and then mid season hand the ball over to Mitch and let him sling the rock around the field. The second half might be one of the best halves a fan could watch.
