This weekend I went to a Polish pizza place called Flo’s & Santo’s. I went with the Polish beer called Zywiec from the keg. I’m not the type of person to go oversees and go to a McDonald’s restaurant or order a Budweiser from the pubs. I like to get the local flavor. Even though the place is in the south loop of Chicago, they had the Polish menu. They had a large menu of beers to choose from as well, but this weekend I went with the lefty from the bull pen and called on  Zywiec.

I had the choice of the pint size or for a dollar more, the monster size 22 oz. I went with the monster size as I worked up quite a thirst. I did like Zywiec, it went down very easy. I had to order a second one. The pour was fantastic as the golden color glistened from the dim lighting in the restaurant/bar. The smell was sweet like a fruity blend aroma. The taste had a lot going on. It had a sweet, fruity hoppy taste. It had some bitterness but not overwhelming. I would definitely order this beer again as it went down smooth.

When there, I had the flying pork wings in BBQ sauce that were very tasty. I then indulged in one of their specialty pizzas which I will have more on in the next pizza entry. Overall I was satisfied with a great drink and food combo.

HOW TO FIX THE CHICAGO BEARS

This is not an easy thing to fix. The Bears need to improve the foundation. The walls can crumble at any time. The first thing is address the quarter back position. In Football, in my opinion, this is the most important position on the field. Love to have a new owner. However that is not going to happen.Love to have the Blackhawks or Theo and Jed from the Cubs run the Bears. Yes, John Paxson and Kenny Williams, I’m not talking about you. They should be fired ASAP in my opinion. As we know the Bears have a top pick in this year’s draft. If the quarter backs were Manning and a Leaf, the Bears would pick the Leaf. I do not trust the Bears picking a quarterback in the first round. If you told the Bears, you have to pick a good quarterback out of a hundred good quarterbacks or the world would blow up, the world would blow up.

The first thing will be dumping Cutler. I tell you I will have an extra few beers on that day when that is announced. The second  thing I would do is sign Brian Hoyer and make him my second string quarterback. He is capable of winning you some games if the number one gets hurt. Then I would avoid playing poker with Bill Belichick to try to land  Jimmy Garoppolo. It will cost you too much. Plus he has only played three games. The Bears could end up like the Houston Texans and giving 70 million to Brock Osweiler. I put my sights on free agent Mike Glennon, former Buccaneer. He lost his job because Tampa Bay drafted James Winston. Glennon has two seasons under his belt. Plus he had some time to watch and learn. He’s only 27 years old so he has some time to develop into something special, of course under the right circumstances. They need to protect him and get him more toys to play with. He would have a good running back already in place. His career QB rating is 84.6 which he has gotten playing on bad teams. He’s a tall guy at 6’7″and he has thrown 30 TDs in 18 starts. Plus he can be there for the long haul, not like other choices on the market. Plus you still keep your top draft pick because Glennon is a free agent.

Now in the first round you can draft an impact defensive player. You can also address the offensive line with an impact player. The Bears never seem to have a young QB that they are grooming for the future. In the later rounds I would draft a QB. He can stand on the sidelines and just learn for the first year. I think you can snag a guy like Chad Kelly from Ole Miss. First he is Hall of Famer Jim Kelly’s nephew. That’s your QB coach. You know Jim will talk sense into the troubled youngster who has been in a few mishaps in College. However he is not Johnny “no football” Manziel. This might not work because again the Bears have not drafted a guy that can play well at that position. Chad Kelly’s stock has fallen, but this guy will be a sleeper in this year’s draft. He has a big arm and he has beaten some big programs over his college career. He has beaten Bama in Alabama. I love the way he can sling the ball down the field. I would feel confident being down by a few touch downs and this guy has the talents and moxy to bring you back in the game.

I know it’s easier said than done. But my way I have Mike Glennon as my number one. Then Brian Hoyer as my number two. Then my sleeper waiting in the wings, Chad Kelly. The Bears still would need to fix the offensive line. I want another tackle. I would like to see them get another tight end that can catch as well as block. Then in free agency or draft, another wide receiver because they are very weak at that position.Kenny Stills or Terrelle Pryor would be good fits. Then keep adding to that defense that has shown some signs they are an up and coming unit. I would try to add a shut down cornerback. I would look at Buffalo Bills Stephon Gilmore. The Bears have money to spend with a lot of wiggle room under the salary cap. If they do it right they might be able to get back to the playoffs.

First Pizza Entry(Thin Crust)

PIZZA PLUS   (4102 SW Hwy, Hometown)

The first official pizza of the blog is a very good one. Pizza Plus is located in Hometown, which is on the outskirts of Oak Lawn and Chicago. We went with a thin crust pizza with all sausage and half spinach.

img_5749

This pizza was very enjoyable. The sauce was sweet. The cheese was gooey. The spinach was very fresh and they did not hold back. The meat was tasty. It had the crispy edge while the middle just melted in your mouth. Excellent!!!

The place is very reasonable money wise. I ordered some french fries which were very good. But, I leaped out of my skin over how good the breaded Mac bites were.

I had the pizza delivered. My drink of choice with the pizza was soda.

THE ZOMBIE CORNER

The Zombie Corner will feature all sorts of zombies and zombie related stuff. The Walking Dead is a very popular conversation when you’re sitting on your bar stool. Everyone has a few people in their lives that they discuss the show with. These conversations lead into what you would do if a zombie apocalypse took place. Donald Trump is our President and the Cubs won the World Series so anything can happen. I’m hopeful we can come up with a plan just in case that happens. We can answer all the questions that are frequently asked.

Where would you go? What would be the weapon of your choice? What food would you miss during a zombie apocalypse? Do you have anybody you would throw at the zombies to escape?  Obviously you want all your family and friends if you could, but which ones do you think would be able survive and help you at the same time through the zombie apocalypse? Where do you think a safe haven would be? We have lots of questions and we probably miss lots as well. I think my knights around the Barage bar and I can help get some answers to these questions and help you survive the world of zombies trying to eat you. We will also discuss zombie movies from the past and present. It’s anything zombie in the Zombie Corner.

My zombie of the week

winslow-the-zombie

Winslow From Walking Dead two weeks ago

My favorite zombie kill

dawn-of-the-dead-head-shot

The shot gun blast in the original movie Dawn of the Dead

One of my weapons of choice

The girl with the leg gun in the movie Planet Terror

Last week in Walking Dead, Eugene was enjoying a jar of pickles while playing Atari’s Yars’ Revenge.

What video game would you enjoy during a zombie apocalypse during your down time?

What food would you eat while playing the video game?

My answer for food is Potato Chips.

My video game would be Blades of Steel for Nintendo

I would pick Splatter house for Sega Genesis to get me pumped up before I went outside to kill zombies for that day.

HERE’S JOHNNY

Welcome Back Kotter!!!  The Black Hawks make a move before the trade deadline and welcome back former teammate, Johnny Oduya, back in the fold. The Blackhawks sent prospect Mark McNeil and a couple draft picks to the Dallas Stars to acquire Oduya.  Johnny has only played 37 games this year due to some injuries. He has only scored one goal while tallying six assists this year when he’s been on the ice.

They say defense wins championships in sports and the Hawks bring back a guy that helped them win the cup in 2013 and 2015. It’s not a splashy move, but it’s a solid move that will strengthen the defense. In the past, the Hawks went to the playoffs very thin on the defensive front. These moves give you depth at that position and this might be a year they are the strongest at that position.

With the Blackhawks salary cap, it is very hard to make a huge deal. Stan Bowman has went down this road before, last year by trading for former Blackhawk, Andrew Ladd. That deal did not make or break the Hawks. But they probably thought they might catch lightning in a bottle and get more production out of Ladd.  The Blackhawks have solid goaltending. They have plenty of offensive fire power as well. This move will improve the whole team.

Oduya is a great teammate. He is a scrappy player that does all the little things that are not in the stat book at the end of the game. He might only be a rental player, but if he helps you snag another cup, it will be worth it. What I love about the move is he already has chemistry with the core players on the team. I think he did not want to leave the team when he became a free agent a few seasons ago. I think the Hawks wanted him, but with the salary cap the way it is, they could not afford him. This season has been a down year for him, dealing with injuries. Now being traded to a team that has a chance to win the cup. Plus a team you have played on for several years. That will give somebody a different mind set and it can give the Blackhawks more energy to continue the red hot streak they already on.

ONE CITY’S GARBAGE IS ANOTHER CITY’S TREASURE, NOT ALWAYS?

I remember when I was a wee lad, Dennis Farina was on Old Style beer commercials. Old Style brewed beer in the midwest only. Places out West and places out East never had Old Style. It was very popular in Chicago. I remember my cousin from New York taking a few cases of Old Style back to New York because he loved the beer. Dennis Farina would do commercials for Old Style and Old Style Classic draft, which I thought was good, but it did not last long. Farina would say in commercials “Old Style is our beer and you can’t have it.”

He would even mention New York and LA saying “It’s our beer and you can’t have it.”

old-style-classic-draft           denis-farina

If you were going to give New York something, what would that be? Some might say ‘Please take my wife, leave the dog.” Chicago has been giving New York junk. However, New York seems to take it.Maybe New York teams are from the only city that takes Chicago’s washed up athletes. The last few years we traded the schizo, Brandon Marshall, to the Jets. Maybe we only got back a used clipboard, but we got rid of some toxic waste in the locker room. Then Matt Forte who you hate to see go.He is an outstanding person, played hard and put up some great numbers as well. Did he do better than Howard this year for the Bears? I do believe the Bears got extremely lucky on that. They avoid paying an older player big money in his declining years. Then the Jets picked him up. My buddy would say REAL NICE.

My favorite is the trade between the Knicks and the Bulls. To get rid of Derrick Rose was like Christmas. Rose had some great years. Injuries happened and Oh my God the way he had his playing schedule towards the end of his Bulls days was priceless. His posse would tell John Paxson and the coach when he could play. He would play Tuesday, skip Thursday’s game and play Saturday, only to skip Sunday. Then he had two years left on his contract. At the media day he was telling the world he was not making enough money to support his family. He makes millions of dollars and has a shoe deal worth a lot. He says this on media day while every other superstar across the league is talking about the team and their chances for this year. They traded him and that contract, and got some players back. Nothing special, but now you plant the Rose at the garden in New York. Now they want to cut him. Then the Knicks signed Joakim Noah, whose hustle I loved. I like him as a person as well, as he did things around the city to help. Thought team first. But he was on his last leg. He was like a car with three flat tires. Yet the Knicks picked him up and gave him big money to play. He is hurt again. Same injury he had with the Bulls a few years ago.

Maybe the Jets need a Quarterback. We have the biggest jalopy in town named Jay Cutler. I love to see the Cutler model behind center with his old pals. Maybe the Jets will get the whole band back together and sign former Bear and Pat, Marty Bennett. I can see the Chicago reunion happening in the 2017 season. The fun will be had in the city that does not sleep. You gotta love a city that helps you out. We get to keep our beer, you can have our crappy overpriced players and that’s REAL NICE .

SHOULD THE BEARS FRANCHISE TAG ALSHON JEFFERY ?

The Chicago Bears still have not worked out a long term deal with their star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Last year they franchise tagged him and he played under a one year contract. Since they have no deal with him they will have to franchise tag him again or let him walk. If the Bears choose to franchise tag him and not work out a long term deal, they will have to pay him for one year like one of the top wide-outs in the league. He could be getting 17.5 million for a guy that has injury problems. He has only played in 11 games over the last two seasons.

Do the Bears need to be paying that kind of money to one player when you have so many holes to fill on that roster For that kind of cheddar you probably could sign three or four guys to fill some of your problem areas. Not that receiver is your strongest position. The great Kevin White, two years on the team, has only played four games. Caught 19 balls, but under 200 yards. My Grandmother could tackle him. Then “Rock hands” Josh Bellamy can get open. Wide Open and he gets the perfect pass and just has the dropsies. In the movie Animal house at the end where they say what everyone went on to be after college, for D-Day they say whereabouts unknown.  That is Marquess Wilson. Plays a game a year and whereabouts are unknown. Eddie Royal, one of Cutler’s guys, maybe if he pays the Bears you can keep him. I do like Cameron Meredith. He’s looking like he can be a pretty decent option grabbing 66 balls for 888 yards and four touchdowns last year. The wide receiver  position, any way you look at it, is weak and teams will just double cover Jeffery and take him out of his game.

Besides, who will be throwing Alshon Jeffery the ball? Cutler is on the trading block like they are going to get a bag of used footballs for him. The Bears will probably end up releasing him as every Chicagoan will be dancing in the streets. It will be like all those war torn countries when they are burning flags and shooting off AK 47’s. Then you always see one of the teenagers wearing a old football jersey. Like an old hand me down that’s colors are fading. In a few years ISIS will have enough Cutler jerseys to cover the whole operation. Will they mortgage the whole farm for the New England quarterback? Bears dealings are like selling the cow for some beans. If they do get Jimmy Garoppolo, I rather invest the money you give Jeffery into the offensive line to keep Jimmy standing after 16 games. If they draft a young guy and go with a bridge quarterback, what does paying Jeffery do for you? By the time the Bears get the boat dug up from the bottom of Lake Michigan, Jeffery will be too old. I hate getting rid of someone you drafted, especially when they are talented. The Bears are not in win mode next year. If they were, I would get Romo and keep Alshon Jeffery. Jeffery will go on to a team and collect a big payday that the Bears can not afford right now.

THE BEER LIST

2/27/17 #1. PINBALL (TWO BROTHERS BREWING COMPANY)

Style (American Pale Ale)

First time I have had the Pinball, which is relatively still new. I had four pints over the weekend at one of my many watering holes I go to. The menu said the beer was just tapped. It was a great pour. I wish my phone had more charge at the time to take a picture. It was magical as it lit up my taste buds like the lights on a pinball machine. It was hoppy with sweet aromas. Small amount of bitterness. It had that tropical fruity taste that made my taste buds explode. I will have to stock up when I see it at stores.

I went to Deja Brew in Oak Lawn, Illinois. They have many craft beers on tap. They have great food as well. I had the Buffalo Chicken wrap with ranch dressing and a side of their hot chips which were all delightful.

BEER LABEL ART OF THE WEEK

img_5746

SPACE STATION MIDDLE FINGER (2-26-17)

3 FLOYDS BREWING CORP

3 Floyds will probably get a lot of their beers in as best label of the week. Three Floyds beers will also have a lot of their beers appear on the BEER LIST of top beers to indulge in. Having a Space station giving the middle finger in the label is brilliant in my book.
