BLACK HAWKS DOWN

The NHL playoffs without the Blackhawks is like the year without a Santa Clause. This is the second Christmas, referring to the NHL playoffs, that Santa has not shown up to. The Blackhawks still have a core from those three Stanley Cup teams still playing today. They have some young talent peaking. The core takes up the majority of the salary cap each season. Plus most of the core still around most likely have no trade clauses. This past season we’ve seen Joel Quenneville get the ax. He resurfaced at the end of regular season landing with the Panthers. It was very streaky team that went on runs and racked up victories. These were the same Blackhawks who looked like they had been hit and spun out of control most of season and crashed and burned. The offense is one of the best in the league. The defense is just a former shell of themselves like the guy in Slap Shot that warned the others if he gets hit in the boards he’ll piss himself.

When the Blackhawks were racking up Stanley Cups, they became the hardest ticket in town to get. I was never able to see the main core play live and skate on the ice. It was not like I had no money and had to purchase tube socks off the guys that sell them on the turn pike. Blackhawks tickets were mission impossible to get in their hey day. Not to see future hall of famers like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in your own home town, just shameful. Thursday, April 4th, I was finally able to get into the United Center and see them play. This was not my first Blackhawks game as I’ve been there in dark times when the crickets owned the ice. It seemed the only time to get to see the Blackhawks was during those bad days of hockey on the ice. Ownership was very bad. Home games were never played on TV. Things finally changed and the owner’s son turned it all around and changed the franchise forever.

I would have loved to have seen the Blackhawks this April gearing up for the playoffs instead of playing spoiler. In which they did as they beat St. Louis in overtime and they were trying to get a better seed. I did get to hear the fans get crazy during the National Anthem. Just brings goosebumps up and down the spine. Then to see all the banners hung up in the United Center. Seeing them from a Bulls game or a concert is not the same as at a hockey game. The energy of the team and fans when the lights go off and they flash the lights as they announce the line up.

Sat in the club level seats because a friend got free tickets from someone he knew. The craft beers were going down nice. The pulled pork sandwhich was incredible as my stomach felt full but my wallet was not. Great seats to see Jonathan Toews score his career high 35th goal of the year. Patrick Kane had an assist. Then seeing later on Patrick Kane score, I hit the double bonus. He also set a new career high for himself with 107 points. Then you see Alex DeBrincat skate another big weapon for the Blackhawks who has over 40 goals. Then you still have Brandon Sadd who had 23 goals for you this regular season. You know he will get better and is young to regain his old form when he was delivering key goals in those playoffs. Then Artem Anisimov who dealt with some injuries but put up 15 goals for the team. The Blackhawks are a top ten scoring team in the NHL in regular season. Call me crazy and you could say getting the band back together, the one guy I would want back is Atemi Panarin. He plays for Columbus right now and will be a free agent. If I was the Blackhawks I would bring him back with his 28 goals in regular season the Blackhawks would be an offensive juggernaut.

That is easier said than done. What about the defense? The Blackhawks have to shed some core members who have lost many steps and are being paid a lot of money. Love Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. The Blackhawks had the lead during the game I was at. They gave up late goals to the Blues because the defense was not their old form. When Duncan Keith was spitting out teeth like a baseball player spitting out sunflower seeds, that was when he was one of the best defenders in the league. Seabrook had the half ice lazer shot that was always good for a dozen goals a year. Both of these guys need to be put down. Not sure anybody would trade you for them. The money is not equal with the production. If they want to get back to the playoffs I would not take these guys in the back of the shed and shoot them. But the team needs cap space. The weakest link is defense.

Then another concern is what is going on at the goalie position. Corey Crawford has been one of the best goalies the Blackhawks ever had. They have a history with many great back stops in net. The concussions keep piling up for Corey. The results are him MIA in many games without him. He is another big salary guy that you’d love to see him regain his mojo and hope we are back in the playoffs. I think we have given him many opportunities to get better and waited for him to get healthy. He has come back and played well but then goes back on the shelf and misses more games than plays. I hate to say we need another goalie… it’s time.

The game ended up being a Blackhawk win but it was decided in a shoot out. My first ever shoot out I have ever seen live. Which was pretty cool. Definitely more exciting live than watching it on TV. Hate to see them get rid of more core pieces that helped the city of Chicago and I have great times watching them win these Stanley Cups. We seen Joel Quenneville go. Some others will have to if this team wants to get back in the playoffs. I think Kane and Toews with all that younger talent can create a second wave of great hockey and get back to the promised land. You need to clear house on defense and goalie and rid yourself of the old legends. If you don’t, your season will end up looking like this.

It’s hard to save everyone when the team crashes. Kane and Toews can’t save the day on the ice each night. If you keep these guys dragging your team down, the one bright side is I will get to see the Blackhawks play more often. Perhaps get myself some tube socks on the way to the game to free me up more beer money.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN

NBA FIRST ROUND PREDICTIONS THE WILD SHAMROCK WAY

What is better? The first round of the NBA playoffs or Weekend at Bernie’s part two? NBA is playing this year playoffs without Lebron James as we are so saddened. Weekend at Bernie’s without Bernie is probably a bigger deal.

We know Bernie’s crew still has some magic left in their weekend. Meanwhile Lebron James’ Magic resigned.

That leaves us with the first round of the playoffs. Who should we predict will play the Warriors in this season’s NBA Championship? Maybe the battle for second and third should be a bigger deal. Perhaps they should get participation ribbons for their efforts.  As usual, the first round of the playoffs looks pretty easy to predict. Each series looks to have a defined winner. We throw an upset into the ring just for shits and giggles to make things spicy. Hope it’s not your team.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (57-25) VERSUS LA CLIPPERS (48-34)

I guess the Clippers get the shortest straw and now face the Warriors in the first round. The NBA needed one California team in that last spot. It came down to the Kings, Lakers and Clippers. I guess you can say the Clippers are the best team in LA this year. For whatever that’s worth.

This first round match up has the feeling of the Clippers bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Clippers will have to bring their own shovel to their own massacre in round one.

Boogie Cousins big series.

WARRIORS SWEEP

HOUSTON ROCKETS (53-29) VERSUS UTAH JAZZ (50-32)

It seems like James Harden is like the wolf from Teen wolf when comes to the Rockets basketball.

The way Harden is like a one man army. Not passing it to anybody. Dribbling for a half hour and then shooting. While the others just stand around. In the movie Teen Wolf, the guy named Chubby ate an apple while just handing the ball to the Wolf. Rockets welcome Clint Capela back from injury. Then Chris Paul who missed some games. This gives the Wolf Harden a chance to travel in a pack for a change which will be needed in the playoffs. Both teams come in red hot. I think the Rockets are just too talented to lose to the Jazz. I think the Jazz will make this into a series.

ROCKETS IN SIX

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS (53-29) VERSUS OKLAHOMA THUNDER

The Blazers swept the Thunder in regular season. However the tables will turn in the playoffs. The big reason the Blazers are without Jusuf Nurkic, which is a big blow to the team’s chances in the playoffs. I think Paul George and Russell Westbrook for the Thunder will take control of the series. Russell Westbrook has still a lot to prove as he keeps seeing former Thunder teammates getting their teams further in the playoffs every year. Last season the Thunder were out very early, but this will not happen again.

THUNDER IN SIX

DENVER NUGGETS (54-28) VERSUS SAN ANTONIO SPURS (48-34)

The Spurs amaze me with their 22nd straight year in the post season. They have their work cut out for them against a young, scrappy, and hungry team the Denver Nuggets. Denver has not been in the playoffs since 2013. The Nuggets have a very deep roster and will win this series. San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, one of the best in the business. His teams always play strong and I can see them taking two games in this series.

NUGGETS IN SIX

EASTERN CONFERENCE

MILWAUKEE BUCKS (60-22) VERSUS DETROIT PISTONS (41-41)

I love the Milwaukee Bucks, this is my kind of team. It’s a team that has been building for years and now are coming together to become a true force in the league. It’s a team not built on the three superstar buddy system. MVP Gionnis Antetokounmpo wants to beat you, not join you.

The Bucks are my pick for the Eastern conference. Bucks will handle the Pistons with ease in the first round. Pistons’ Blake Griffen, I will give him having a few good dunks in the series. That’s like getting a participation ribbon and pat on the bum for effort.

BUCKS SWEEP

BOSTON CELTICS (49-33) VERSUS INDIANA PACERS (48-34)

The Celtics had a very disappointed season this regular season. The Celtics are a very streaky team. They are playing a Pacer team without their allstar Victor Oladipo. The Pacers have the third best defense in the league. This will be a grind out type of series I believe. I give the Celtics the edge as Brad Stevens is their coach. He makes the right move in a key situation. I think his game plan will get the Celtics to the second round. Perhaps they might gain more confidence as the playoffs go on and become trouble with their second opponent in the next round.

CELTICS IN SEVEN

TORONTO RAPTORS (59-24) VERSUS ORLANDO MAGIC (42-40)

Orlando Magic had to make a late run late in the season just to make it in the playoffs. The Magic won 11-13 games and they got in. Now to play one of the elite teams in the Eastern conference. Before the season with Lebron James going to LA, people thought Toronto has a good shot at being the number one dog in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors were going deep in the playoffs. Guys like Kyle Lowery and Pascal Siakam now have gotten help from the front office. Adding Kawhi Leonard and Marc Gasol gives this team a fair shot at the Eastern conference championship and a meeting with the Warriors. I’d like also for Jeremy Lin to make some kind of play for the Raptors as I’m making a bold statement.

RAPTORS SWEEP

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (51-31) VERSUS BROOKLYN NETS (42-40)

The 76ers might be without Joel Embid in this series. The Nets are an up and coming young team that might put a scare into the 76ers. Led by D’Angelo Russell and a well balanced roster up and down, this series could be the one with the upset. The 76ers with all their moves they made in regular season did not improve their chances where you can say they are the top team in the Eastern conference. Jimmy Butler will infect his cancer all over this team in the post season. Things will unravel and like a blink of the eye the 76ers will be knocked out in round one in a tough series that many would think should have never went the distance.

FLORIDA PANTHERS CHICAGO 2.0

Another team’s junk is another team’s, “We now have a coach with 890 wins recorded in the NHL.” Those 890 victories as a head coach is good for second all-time in the NHL. The Florida Panthers replace their old head coach they just fired with Joel Quenneville. Joel Quenneville became a legend in Chicago as he led the Black Hawks to three Stanley Cup championships in a six year span. The Panthers replaced Bob Boughner with a guy who only trails the great Scot Bowman for the most victories by a head coach in the NHL.

Dale Tallon, the Panther GM, was the one who orchestrated this move in landing Quenneville. This is the same Dale Tallon who hired Joel Quenneville in 2008 to replace Denis Savard as head coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. The first time around, the  Dale Tallon move worked to perfection. As a dynasty was formed when Quenneville took over a team that had young talent galore oozing out of the ice. However Dale Tallon was not in Chicago that long after to see what he constructed pan out. He was fired as he had to watch from home a team he helped build, win three cups. Dale found a job very quickly doing the same job he had done in Chicago, except this time he is in Florida. Has Dale been following the same blue print that worked in Chicago?  Dale has assembled some young talent for the Panthers that are just starting to gel. Then he fires the coach and gets the band back together bringing in Joel Quenneville.

Could this be 1996 all over again for the Florida Panthers? Rubber rats flying out of the stands like hats littering the ice after a three goal night by one player. The Panthers have hired guys with no head coaching experience, 5 out of the last 6 times. The Panthers have had 15 coaches in 25 years. The Panthers have missed the playoffs the last two years by only a few games. Does Joel Quenneville instantly bring this same Panthers team to the playoffs in his first season with the team? Many believe this team is ready to win right now. It might take just getting in the playoffs once for things to take off. After the young Black Hawks got their first taste and won a series then to be eliminated. The following year the Black Hawks went all the way.

I think this move is great for everyone. First Joel Quenneville is walking into a great situation like he did back in Chicago. Aleksaner Barkov had 35 goals with a total 96 points last season. Can he be the new Jonathan Toews? Then the Panthers actually have a guy named Jonathan. Jonathan Huberdeau to be exact who had 30 goals himself. Throw in some solid pieces like Aaron Ewkblad,  Eugenii Dadonon and Vincent Trochek. Joel Quenneville will teach this group how to win games they never thought they could. You will see him max out all their talents and use them in the position where their talents will thrive. If you watched Patrick Cane and Jonathan Toews grow up and become super stars, it’s because they have plenty of talent. Joel Quenneville put them in situations that was best for them Then they grew and became superstars which they are still to this day.

Dale Tallon’s work is not quite done yet. He will need to add some veterans to the mix. Just like those days with the Hawks landing a Marion Hossa. I’m sure Dale has learned from his mistakes and will not get sloppy with the whole salary cap structure that made things hard for the Hawks after they won their first cup. One of the main reasons Dale Tallon was shown the door in Chicago because they knew they would face a lot tough moves and they did without Dale and had to deal some great players to other teams to get back under the cap. One guy that comes to mind who has flourished with the Jets Dustin Byfuglien.

Both Dale Tallon and Coach Q as most people call him, are in their 60’s age wise. Most likely this is their last hurrah to take a team and win a cup. Both hope to do this together in this go-around. If they succeed like they said in the press conference, they could walk off in the sunset. In that same press conference, many of the Panther players were around to see this organization welcome in Coach Q. The players are already believing. The Florida Panther fan base is believing. This move is a big shot to the organization and the the whole sports landscape in South Beach. They compare it to a Don Shula coaching the Dolphins. Or the day the Miami Heat brought in oil slick Pat Riley to run things. Coach Q is already planted in the Chicago Rushmore in coaching. He might have his face in the South Beach Rushmore when he puts the Florida Panthers on the map again. This time the Panther fans are hoping they stay on the map for years to come.

2019 NHL ROUND ONE PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS DONE THE WILD SHAMROCK WAY

We are throwing down the gloves for our first round predictions in the NHL playoffs. We might take some punches back. We might even bleed. However nothing is going to stop us as we predict each series in the first round in hockey. Hockey playoffs are one of the best post seasons out of all sports. Some feelings might be hurt. Beers can cure. Rub some salt on your wounds after you read this. You may think we are geniuses. Or the smart people might see right through us. However can we be right in each series with our crazy outcome? Don’t bet on it.

NHL PLAYOFFS

ROUND ONE  (BEST OUT OF SEVEN)

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING  VERSUS  COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Tampa Bay Lightning have the best record in the league this season. They have a stacked roster with loads of talent and depth on all their lines.  It’s hard to find a crack in their foundation. You can say this team has had their own playoff woes. You can say they can’t close the deal and get back to the Stanley Cup and win it. You can say the Columbus Blue Jackets have never won a playoff series.

LIGHTNING CLOSE THE DEAL AT LEAST IN THE FIRST ROUND

OUR PREDICTION: LIGHTNING IN A FOUR GAME SWEEP

NASHVILLE PREDATORS VERSUS DALLAS STARS

This is the series that has two pretty good defenses going at it. Nashville has the third best defense overall in the NHL this season. The Dallas Stars have one of the hottest goalies in the league in Ben Bishop. Stars rank 28th in offense in the whole league this year. Nashville has problems with their power play. This series could go the distance.

PREDATORS HAVE MORE DEPTH TO SURVIVE A LONGER SERIES

OUR PREDICTION:PREDATORS IN SEVEN

BOSTON BRUINS VERSUS TORONTO MAPLE LEAVES

This is a playoff match up from last season. Then we saw the Bruins and Maple Leafs go all the way to game seven seeing Boston take the series. This is going to be another great one and probably the best series in the first round. Bruins have the home ice advantage. The Maple Leafs offense is a definite top 5 in the league. The Leafs have seven 20 goal scorers in regular season. Boston Bruins are a very solid team but they will have their work cut out for them against the Maple Leafs with their weapons of mass destruction. With Austin Matthews and Mitch Marner, then adding John Tavares from the Islanders, the Leafs got scarier.

TAVARES IS THE KEY THAT LEADS HIS HOME TOWN AND SLAYS THE BRUINS DRAGON

OUR PREDICTION: MAPLE LEAFS IN SIX

CALGARY FLAMES VERSUS COLORADO AVALANCHE

The Avalanche coming in are one of the hottest teams in the league. Calgary is a top ten team in both scoring and allowing the least amount of goals. The Avalanche has some nice talent assembled to make this an interesting series. I could see the Avalanche winning some games. The Flames – who is the guy in net is the big question for them.

JOHNNY GAUDREAU 99 POINT SEASON IS NO FLUKE HE IS MY KEY IN THIS SERIES. IF HE GOES THEY ALL GO.

OUR PREDICTION: FLAMES IN SIX

WASHINGTON CAPITALS VERSUS CAROLINA HURRICANES

Is the owner of the Hurricanes going to cancel the playoffs like he did with the AAF? It does not matter how the Hurricanes celebrate their wins after games. Those highlights of playing duck duck goose. Shooting hoops on skates. Doing the hokey pokey, but they will get turned around versus the Capitals. They are facing the defending champions. The Capitals have swept the Hurricanes this regular season in all four games. Hurricanes are too young. Their kids games are no match for superstar Alex Ovechkin. If the owner of the Hurricanes could only stop this from happening. He does not have that kind of power in the hockey world.

BRING BACK THE WHALERS

If Donald Trump owned the Capitals… the new logo.

OUR PREDICTION: CAPS SWEEP

NEW YORK ISLANDERS VERSUS PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Without John Tavares, the Islanders as a team have the most points since 1984 and we know they were awesome in the early 80’s. Islanders have the number one defense in the league. The Penguins are not a slouch for the first round when they have Sid the Kid. They also bring Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin to the table. Experience definitely goes to the Penguins. The Islanders are that person that goes through a break up and that is with John Tavares. They change their whole life. They work out harder and longer. They do a 360 in life. However this time they run out of gas.

DOOBIE DOOBIE DOO

OUR PREDICTION: PENGUINS IN SIX

ST.LOUIS BLUES VERSUS WINNIPEG JETS

Jets went deep into the playoffs last year. The Blues have been playing well coming into the playoffs. Jets have the home ice advantage. I think the Jets have too much for the Blues to handle. Jets fire power on offense is one of the best in the league. Teams like the Blues used all their energy and fight just to get to the playoffs which will be the factor here. Many sports, the hottest teams coming in can stay hot and ride the course. The Blues goalie does not have that heat penetrating off his pads at this time. We know goalies can carry teams far. Jets are not a team to start getting hot off. It’s like lighting a cigarette in a monsoon.

TOO MUCH BUFF……IN LATIN MEANS BYFUGLIEN

OUR PREDICTION: JETS IN FIVE

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS VERSUS SAN JOSE SHARKS

Knights goal tending is still remarkable. The Sharks have kind of crawled to the end of the season. The Golden Knights are looking to repeat last season’s playoff debut as they got deep. Could they get further in only their second season? The Sharks have Eric Karlsson returning. Could it be a Joe Thornton last shot at another trip to the Stanley Cup championship? Can San Jose stop more pucks than they get in the net? This looks like it should be all Golden Knights. On paper they have a better team. The Sharks are my sleeper. This is the season as I write this on my 12th beer of the night. I think Martin Jones will do better than he did in net in regular season for the Sharks. The tables turn and Knights will not be Golden like they were in their very first season

SHARKS OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE TO LIGHT THE LAMP WAY MORE THAN ONCE.

OUR PREDICTION: SHARKS IN SEVEN

EAGLES BENEFIT AGAIN ON A BEARS MISHAP

The Philadelphia Eagles help their running game by landing Jordan Howard from the Bears last week. Not sure what the Bears are thinking ,helping the team that wiped them out of the playoffs with a star running back for just a simple sixth round draft pick in 2020. Hold the phone, the draft pick could change into a fifth round pick in 2020 with the conditions of the trade which are flexible. Bears selected Jordan Howard in the fifth round and since 2016, he has the third most rushing yards in the league. Why would the Bears give away that kind of production on the cheap?

Jordan Howard was selected by the Bears’ old regime lead by head coach, John Fox. The Bears then, were a team that came off the bus running the ball. Most of the Chicago Bears history involves running the ball and great defense. Things did not work out for John Fox and they brought in an offensive guru in Matt Nagy as head coach who runs the offense. Nagy’s offense consists of open field college style offense with running backs catching a lot of passes out of the back field. Like Kareem Hunt did in Kansas City. We’ve seen Tarik Cohern of the Chicago Bears show off his skill set with his catches out of the backfield as he avoids many defenders in the process. Cohern who also is very exciting, back rushing the ball as he lines up as a double threat. Triple threat if you want him to run the wild cat on some play packages. Jordan Howard only had 20 catches last season, only for 145 yards. Jordan Howard’s style is only between the tacklers running North and South.

Last season, Jordan Howard  though, rushed for 935 yards. He also had nine touchdowns. The coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, Doug Peterson, who has worked with Matt Nagy, runs a similar style offense as the Chiefs and the Bears. He can find a use for Jordan Howard and the Bears can’t. When the Eagles won the Superbowl, they used LeGarette Blount as one of their options out of the back field. He was a big power back that ran people over. Great in goal line situations. Eagles had other options as well that year in Darren Sproles, and Jay Ajayi. Bears did add Mike Davis from Seattle, who does not have a thick resume like Jordan Howard.

Jordan Howard is still being paid from his rookie contract so he only has a year left under his contract. His salary is not collapsing the Bears overall team cap. Last season, when teams wanted to give the Bears a third rounder for Jordan Howard’s services, the Bears turned them down. Why this year do the Bears have to rush him out the door? Sure running backs are a dime a dozen in it seems like every year’s draft. Bears will probably draft a running back. Could they have waited and kept his services during the preseason just in case of sudden injuries? Maybe other teams could suffer some injury with their back and perhaps the Bears could have gotten more from a guy that has run the ball well his whole career. Plus, has stayed healthy.

I loved how the Bears offense is on the rise. They were good, but not great like the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bears defense bailed out the offense many times in 2018. Bears at times got a tad cute for my taste and that cost them mistakes. Not glaring because they won the game. I think the Bears made a bad decision giving up Howard this year. He was a valuable weapon for that team last season. His style of running game was well executed against poor run defenses. His style of run was great at running out the clock in the fourth quarter to secure some of the wins. He was a great goal line option running right at the heart of defense for many scores. Nine to be exact. What is wrong with a thunder lightning combo, a two headed monster in the back field.

Bears have done a lot of great things. Lots of questions arise as well. The kicking situation has haunted them for years still with the release of Robbie Gould. They are paying last year’s kicker which still counts on the salary cap. Last year they let one of their own receivers, Cameron  Meredith, walk out the door. By checking the box on him they could have gotten a draft pick. Then those draft picks to the 49ers to move up one spot. The Jordan Howard thing better not haunt this team in some rematch in the playoffs next season. I guess we can tell Jordan Howard he can take down all his Bears stuff from all of his social media outlets. He should have that down to a science since he thought he was going to be dealt a few times over his short career in Chicago.

ZION GROWING IN THE WOFFORD GARDENS

Would Wofford College still be in the tournament if they had Duke all-star Zion Williamson? You could say having Zion on any roster would improve their chances of staying alive in the tournament. What if these Big schools like Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky could not gobble up all these superstar players? Most of these big schools can land these talented players year after year. They even know most of these players are there at their school for one year and off to the draft the next season.  These big schools have their own money tree of talent in the backyard as they pick another player off the tree to replace the talent that just left after a year and guess what it is… money. It’s like a well oiled machine in a factory producing NBA talent. The Duke, the Kentucky, the North Carolina make the cars. The NBA is the dealership to show the car when it’s ready and obviously drive the car. Could smaller schools benefit for these one and done players?

The Wofford College Terriers are most likely a school you never heard of. Perhaps you have but have no idea where this school is located. The school is located in South Carolina.  Spartanburg, South Carolina to be exact. The same town where Duke’s Zion Williamson played his high school basketball at. Wofford College had Zion right in their backyard. The coach of Wofford, who has been at the school for 30 years and head coaching for 17 years there, probably dreamed of landing a Zion Williamson. Even for one year to have a player with his talent makes everyone around you a bit better. I’m sure Wofford even made a pitch… a call or even a text to Zion. I’m sure these car salesmen who call themselves coaches at these big schools who reek of reptilian cologne, had Zion signed in the 5th grade. Most of these small schools don’t stand a chance to land a guy like Zion.

Schools like Wofford have their work cut out for them. They have to think outside the box and constantly be in searching mode for some kind of talent. Talent that hits but mostly probably misses. Schools like Wofford have to make it to the big dance to be on national television. If they lose they are forgotten about again until they come back years later like Haley’s comet and make it back to the March Madness tournament. Wofford had never won a tournament game in their history coming into this March Madness. This year they finally achieved their first ever tournament win. Seton Hall was their first ever victim. The team came in with their highest seed ever, a number seven. When they beat Seton Hall they won their 30th game of the year which is a new record. They won 21 in a row until the next round versus Kentucky. It was a close game.

Schools like Wofford need time to grow. The team gets better when their players stick around and play many games together. If players stuck around and played all four years, college basketball would be even better than it is. Wofford’s success definitely came down to playing as a team. One guy did stick it out on this Wofford team. His whole career actually. He was a big part of why the team got far. Why the team won their first ever tournament game. It was Fletcher Magee who broke the NCAA division one all-time record in three pointers made. It was the game versus Seton Hall where he broke this record and had a total of 509 for his career. He broke Seth Curry’s record from Davidson. Yes, the same Seth Curry who leads the Golden State Warriors. In that Kentucky game, Wofford played the Wild Cats very tough. However Fletcher Magee set a record he wishes he did not in that contest. He went 0-12 long distance. The game before, he drained seven three pointers. Wofford lost by six points. If Fletcher would have hit three long shots, Wofford would be moving on. At least two three point shots and the game is going to overtime.

If Wofford had a Zion Williamson with a Fletcher Magee, could they have prevailed over Kentucky? Having a two star tandem like those two and let’s not forget about the rest of the roster which is pretty damn impressive. Two or three shots made and Wofford would be talked about in the sweet 16 and that is without Zion. To go back to the beginning, if somehow these small schools could get these players like Zion, we could be talking more than sweet 16 for Wofford. A player like Zion in that one year could probably put a small school like Wofford on the map. Then when a team like Wofford makes it back to the tournament, no one would ask where the hell that school is from. If College basketball had the same rules as the new football league, the AFF, where players are chosen regionally. Perhaps a Wofford would have gotten the superstar from their own backyard. Maybe smaller colleges need to hire the oil slick hairdos as their coaches. To get down and slime these young players from the mother’s womb. Some of them do hire these types and they use the small college as just a stepping stone to go coach at a bigger program. See Billy Selfish from Kansas. Perhaps if these schools can get more scholarship money to offer. I think they need to find a way to get these smaller schools an advantage in fishing in the deep waters. Everything comes down to big business. TV rights plays a factor because these players want the spotlight. If they can’t get the spotlight so they can leaf frog into the NBA, they do not want any part of a small potatoes school like Wofford. That’s why the Dukes, North Carolinas and the Kentuckys are still standing tall in the sweet sixteen. Meanwhile the smaller schools get the credit they deserve, but than disappear from the basketball landscape until they rebuild years from now. Pro sports have gone from trying to have every team having a chance with a salary cap. Could College Basketball make the court much leveler? Balancing the budget in the state of Illinois seems a lot easier.

THE AAF POWER RANKINGS WEEK 7 THE WILD SHAMROCK WAY

Week six had lots of firsts. The first loss suffered by the Apollos. The first touchdown thrown by a quarterback in Birmingham. The Commanders are red hot. The bells were rung in Salt Lake City. Another crazy ending in San Diego. Atlanta back on the slab. These were all small potatoes stories in week six. The big news is the Alliance have added another Johnny. Will Johnny Manzeil be Johnny be Good ? Will we ever find out what happened in Canada? If this Johnny Football part four does not work out,  we have another idea.

Johnny and Charlie could be in a new sitcom together. Boosum Buddies the remake. Who can round up the most chicks? Who can drink the most booze? Add some drugs. Add lots of boobs and Skinemax should be calling. Up all night with Johnny and Charlie.

#1.ORLANDO APOLLOS (5-1) Ranking: Same

I did not think it was going to happen but it totally went down for the Apollos. Someone actually beat them to giving the Orlando squad their first loss of the season. Then to lose to a team that has been in a tailspin the last three weeks and probably hit the ground hard with an explosion on impact. It was that bad to lose to the Hot Shots. You could say the Apollos were flat in this one. The Hot Shots put lots of pressure on the Apollo quarterback to make him uncomfortable. The result was Garrett Gilbert threw his first interception of the year. You could say the Apollos were dealing with some injuries on their O-line. The Apollos lost one of their main defenders getting kicked out of the game for a punch that was more like a love tap of some kind. It was a very bad game of flags almost every other play as the third quarter dragged on. Overall, teams, even the great teams have this one bad game where everything goes south. Steve Spurrier will regroup and will get his squad back on right track for the next game. We keep the Apollos at top of the charts thinking exactly just a bad day at the office.

#2.SAN ANTONIO COMMANDERS (4-2) Ranking: Same

The San Antonio Commanders are the hottest team in the alliance right now. Logan Woodside is airing it out.  Kenneth Sparrow weaving and grooving through defenses. The big target wide out, Mekale McKay, is piling up catches and yards as he is emerging into the top receiver in the league. The defense continues to stop offenses right in their tracks. They are forcing turnovers. Last two weeks, the Commanders have gotten off to very fast starts. In the blink of an eye, the Commanders’ leads have been up by three scores before the fans even sit in their seats. They are right on the heels of the Apollos. When the Apollos beat the Commanders a few weeks back, that was one of the better games of the year.  Could we have an Allianace championship prediction?

#3.BIRMINGHAM IRON (4-2) Ranking:Up 1 spot

The Iron have been playing some musical chairs with their quarterback position. Luis Perez has hit a rut. Keith Price has been filling in. Week six the Iron finally threw a passing touchdown. Which QB? Keith Price started the game, but he got hurt and in came Luis Perez. He immediately drove the team down the field and threw his first touchdown to Trent Richardson, who seems to be the only one that can get in the end zone for the Iron. Only in San Diego, week after week epic games happen there. The Fleet and the Iron exchanged scores all day. Luis Perez regained his mojo and threw three scores.

Another play maker has emerged in the league and plays for the Iron. Wide receiver L’Damian Washington had a monster game. In the end, San Diego was doomed by two of their own. Luis Perez from San Diego led his team on the winning drive. Then Nick Novak drilled the winning field goal to seal the deal. He kicked for the Chargers for a few years. Seems the Alliance have many X Charger kickers in the league. It was a big win on the road for the Iron.  A win that snaps a two game losing streak. Plus, Luis Perez, they are hopeful has found himself again.

#4.SAN DIEGO FLEET (3-3) Ranking:Down one spot

The Fleet better figure out how to win on the road. They were winning all those epic close games at home. The Iron prevailed on the Fleet last week like the week before the Fleet prevailed over the Stallions in the last minute. The Fleet defense are forcing many turnovers but they are not stopping offenses. The Fleet on offense are getting it done. The Fleet running game already has thunder and lightning, plus now added Bishop Sankey in the mix. The three headed monster they have is the best running  game in the league.

Terrell Watson who is thunder, continues to run over people as he found the end zone two times. One rushing and the other receiving with a great catch. Mike Martz has limited the mistakes by his quarterback who is getting better. They need to make a few more stops on defense if they want to be in the thick of things when the playoffs arrive.

#5.SALT LAKE CITY STALLIONS (2-4) Ranking: Up two spots

The Stallions rang the bell on the Express last week. A win they needed really badly. Especially after they gave another game away versus the Fleet two weeks ago. The Stallions knocked out Zach Mettenberger and then really took it to the Express. Stallions who have the number one run defense in the league. They have the stoutest of all offensive lines. They have a pretty good quarterback as well. If they can get pass their kryptonite on the road, they can get back in this race. Yes the new door bell bringing down the book of Mormon profits.

With this technology everyone knows what the book of Mormons are up to.

#6.ARIZONA HOT SHOTS  (3-3) Ranking Up two spots

The Hot Shots by many, thought they would be the best team in the league. They started off hot and then went colder than Subzero from Mortal Kombat. The Hot Shots welcomed back Steve Johnson from injury.

Steve Johnson is the heart and soul of the defense. He came up big. Plus the Hot Shots did not find themselves in the usual hole that they dig early in the game. This and no mistakes by quarterback John Wolford, were the keys for beating the best team in the league, the Apollos. Giving them their first loss of their existence. Orlando came out flat. It was a sloppy game in penalties from the referee’s shoes. However the Hot Shots played their best game of the year since the very first week of the season. Will they build on this the rest of the season and rise up to challenge? They have plenty of talent to do so.

#7.ATLANTA LEGENDS (2-3) Ranking: Down two spots

The Legends started the season and the team play was horrible. After finally getting stability in the coaching staff, the team had a two game winning streak. Aaron Murray took over for Matt Simms due to injury and things were taking off. Last week, you could throw all that good stuff I just said out the window. The team went back to their old roots. It was a sloppy mess as the Commanders just outgunned the Legends.

#8.MEMPHIS EXPRESS (1-4) Ranking: Down two spots

First it was Christian Hackenberg behind center. That was a bad scene. Then they put in Zach Mettenberger and the Express felt some hope. They went out and finally won a game. Zach won his first professional game behind center. Then they had a chance to win two in a row. The wheels fell off the bus. Then last week Zach Mettenberger is injured, making it now a three game losing streak. Is it time to put the toe tag on the Express for the season?

Back from Canada on his like 4th chance of this epic comeback to be a quarterback for a professional football team, Johnny Manziel will now be the new face behind center for the Memphis Express. Another league and another comeback for Johnny Football. Could he lead the Express out of the gutter of the Alliance? Watch out Elvis mansion, Johnny Football might be crashing in your house. The tour of the Elvis mansion will be turned into something out of the Star Wars bars.

Elvis will be turning in his grave seeing the King of Rock n Roll mansion turning into something from punk rock to death metal. Elvis might not mind all the blow and hookers. But his pool table will suffer damage from the element Johnny Football brings to the table. The Elvis Mansion will be the new delta house on the Memphis campus with Johnny invading your town.

SUNDAY FUNDAY NFL OFF-SEASON GRADES

“I served my country, I played High school football”.

Al Bundy, a True American. Never see him kneeling for the National Anthem.

GRADING EACH TEAM OFF SEASON ACTIVITIES

We have graded each team in the NFL for what they did or did not do ,this off season. Instead of grades we have them in special categories. Teams that have done the best job are awarded the holy grail which they went out to seek, and they earned it. The second category is… job well done, you filled in some holes. The third category is a sale at Penny’s. These are the teams that shopped at the Aldi for their stock, the roster type of players. Then the teams that are on secret double probation and scored 0.0 this off season… the bottom of the barrel rankings of our grading scale.

THE TEAMS THAT ACHIEVED HOLY GRAIL STATUS

NEW YORK JETS: The New Jets have been very busy this off season. They made splashes on both sides of the ball. They improved their defense by signing former Raven C.J Mosley to a big deal to help anchor that Jet defense. They added former Falcon, Brian Poole. Then they brought back a few of their own to keep their defense intact.

On offense, they added a big weapon of mass destruction. Leveon Bell, a hold out last season in Pittsburgh, is one of the biggest playmakers in the league to come out of the back field. With a year off, he should be considered very dangerous and will be seeking to have a monster year. They added Jamison Crowder, a wide out from the Skins. They improved their special teams with the signing of former Bear, Josh Bellamy. Just hope they don’t need him as a receiver because he goes by rock hands and drops everything that is thrown perfectly to him. Overall improving the defense and giving your young quarterback some weapons, could turn this team around very quickly.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: 49ERS need their Jimmy back. Jimmy Garopolo needs to start for this team. He needs to stay healthy if this team wants to get past the Rams. I did like the 49ers trying to improve their weakness this off season, their defense. First on offense, they signed Falcons running back, Tevin Coleman. Then they signed Eagles wide out, Jordan Matthews. Two guys that can chip in to a pretty good offense already established.

On defense, the big trade to get  Dee Ford from the Chiefs. A great linebacker. Just in playoff games versus the Patriots, make sure he does not line up in the neutral zone. Then the 49ers added David Mayo LB from the Panthers. They are taking a chance on two defensive guys that had the injury bug in 2018. Linebacker, Kwon Alexander, and the Chargers defensive back ,Jason Verrett. Talented players, but can they stay on the field? The biggest two questions… can Jimmy be the starter for the whole year?  Is Jimmy a franchise quarterback?

TENNESSEE TITANS: The Titans already had a pretty good defense. They added a big pass rusher, former Dolphin Cameron Wake, which is huge. A guy that can pressure the quarterback, especially at critical times of the game, will help cement many leads.

I like what they did on offense and that was trading for the Dolphins quarterback, Ryan Tannehill. We might as well call the Titans, the Tennessee Dolphins. With Marcus Mariota also having to deal with injuries, is why I like Tannehill. You can say Tannehill has the same stats as Mariota and deals with nagging injuries himself. Put two of them on the same roster and they should be able to get through a season, I hope. Perhaps they need a third veteran injury prone quarterback to be sure to get through the grind of a season.

I like the new receiver who they took from the Buccaneers. Adam Humpries is one of those under the radar type of signings that will give the Titans a guy that can move the chains. Look at Julian Edelman, Superbowl MVP. Plus they added Roger Saffold to enforce the line to help prevent their injury prone quarterbacks from going down every other series.

OAKLAND RAIDERS: The Raiders have been the butt of many people around the league’s jokes since Jon Gruden has taken over.  They traded away lots of their talent including Khaili Mack to the Bears. That’s a guy you build your team around. They stocked up piles of draft picks, especially in the first round. The Raiders were horrible last season and looked like they might have been out of a home for a season before they bolt to Vegas. However they bamboozled  their X gal-friend in Oakland to move in for one more year.

Then they fleeced the Steelers in the Antonio Brown trade. Derrick Carr needs a weapon even though Brown is diva prom prissy receiver, he can make big plays. Then they added the Chargers’ Tyrell Williams, a weapon of Phillip Rivers. A guy who played in the same division. Then Chucky built a new Berlin wall in the signings of Trent Brown and Lamarcus Joyner. Donald Trump will be proud of the craftsmanship of this fence around Carr.

Then you have to be Raider-like and nab a head hunter. A dirty player. Antonio Brown’s bosom buddy from the Bengals, in Vontaze Burfict. As long as he does not take out Brown’s head in practice, it’ll be ok. The Raiders still have all their first round draft picks in their disposal as well to get more pieces to the puzzle. Now who is going to call Gruden and the Raiders morons?

CLEVELAND BROWNS: CLEVELAND ROCKS!!! Absolutely. They are building the stealth of all offenses. Bringing in Odell Beckham and Kareem Hunt with the weapons they already have on offense with Baker Mayfield behind center is big excitement .

Plus they added some interesting pieces to the defensive side. Sheldon Richardson from the Vikings. Oliver Vernon from the Giants. Adding guys like that to a pretty good established unit from a year ago will make them one of the better defenses in the league. Could perhaps rise up to one of the best in the league adding more through the draft.

BUFFALO BILLS: Buffalo Bills went on a shopping spree. They went on an offensive side-of-the-ball binge. The Bills had holes in their offensive line like Swiss cheese. They had the worst receiving group in the league.

The line brought in Mitch Morse from the Chiefs. They brought in Ty Nsekhe from the Skins.

The new receiving core brings in speedster Josh Brown which will go well with Josh Allen’s big arm. I like Cole Beasley from the Cowboys. Every quarterback needs a security blanket. The Bills cut unproductive Charles Clay which them signing him to that kind of money was a rusty ice pick poking one of your eyeballs out. They landed a new tight end, Tyler Kroft, who saw some action with the Bengals filling in for their injury prone starter.

I like Frank Gore, even though he is old he can be very productive. He’s probably way better than Shady McCoy, who the Bills still have. Like to see them draft another running back. They also added Andre Roberts, a weapon on special teams. A guy that can return kicks and punts to get your team a better field position.

On defense they brought in  a cornerback from Houston in Kevin Johnson. I like to see them add more pieces to an already good defense in the draft. Overall the Bills improved their roster big time. They filled a lot of holes. Not sure they can get past the Evil Empire in their division, but they are closer than ever.

TEAMS THAT ACHIEVED A PAT ON THE BACK AND DRAFT BEER FOR JOB WELL DONE

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: I think the Eagles can pat themselves on the back this off season. They brought back many of their own guys. They had to let go of Nick Foles. They traded cancer, Michael Bennett, to the Evil Empire. They added Malik Jackson from the Jags to improve their defensive line.

They brought back DeSean Jackson, a play maker that can stretch the field for Carson Wentz, and will make their offense a lot better. They can do more things including running the ball more as defenses will have to focus on their receivers. Which will  open up bigger holes for their backs.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: Saints do not have a huge amount of space in their salary cap.  They were able to make some interesting moves that could help this team get back into playoffs and perhaps put them over the hump into the Superbowl. Saints added two guys to their defensive line. Signing Malcom Brown away from the Patriots. They added a defensive end in Mario Edwards.

On offense they improve their line, nabbing Nick Eason away from the Vikings. They also needed to replace Mark Ingram, part of that two headed monster in the backfield. They found a Latavius Murray on clearance in hopes he can provide somewhat the same kind of impact as Mark Ingram. In the draft, the Saints can now concentrate on creating more depth on their roster.

GREEN BAY PACKERS: Packers going down a different road these days. Very active in the free agency market. This year on the defensive side of the ball. Having one of the the best quarterbacks, you know your team will score. Stopping the other team’s offense is a great way overall to get better. First they snag a player from the division rival Bears, in safety Adrian Amos, a smart player with football intellect. Then they landed two Smiths, one from the Skins and the other from the Ravens. Both Preston Smith and  Zadarius Smith can tackle and make plays.

The Packers added a guy to the offensive line from the Broncos in Billy Turner. They also added an old luxury car to the garage. Marcedes Lewis, not sure how much gas he has left in the tank. Could be a nice weapon in the red zone for Rodgers.

DETROIT LIONS: Lions are looking to be the Patriots of the Midwest. Lots of Patriot blood added to the mix in motor city. Trey Flowers, the Patriots’ best defensive linemen, follows his former coach and is now a Lion. Justin Coleman, a corner back with Patriots blood, was also added. Both moves will improve that defense.

On offense I like the signing of Jesse James, former Steeler tight end. This gives Stafford a big weapon in the red zone. Then bringing in another Patriot, Danny Amendola, will give Stafford a much needed slot receiver. Across the board job well done.

DENVER BRONCOS: The Broncos biggest move was steeling Vic Fangio away from the Bears. I think the Broncos already have some great pieces on the defensive side of of the ball. They brought in X bear Bryce Callahan who’s very good at defending against the slot receivers. Then they brought in veteran defensive back, Kareem Jackson. Nice pieces in place. Nice pieces added with Fangio’s philosophy that the Broncos defense can emerge as one of the leagues best.

On offense they got rid of Case Keenum. Even though the Broncos will absorb most of that contract, they needed to rid themselves of the one year wonder. Joe Flacco is an upgrade over Keenum. This Flacco move could backfire on Elway and the Broncos. The thing I like about it is Joe Flacco has something to prove. He could have a turn around year and possibly play at the level when he won the Superbowl with the Ravens years ago. They added a big offensive lineman from Miami in Jawan James. They need more help on this team, but right now from last year to compare with job well done.

ARIZONA CARDINALS: The Cardinals definitely needed to improve their offensive line because all of their quarterbacks had no time. Especially the rookie quarterback Josh Rosen who they might give up on already.

They landed Marcus Gilbert in trade with the Steelers. Plus they signed guard JR Sweezy

The Cardinals biggest move was landing Raven DE Terrell Suggs who is coming home to Arizona where he played college. They also added Jordan Hicks LB from the Eagles. These moves improve a defense that was pretty good already.

The Cardinals also are taking flyers out on Kevin White, a very injury prone receiver and former Bear. Then back up quarterback Brent Hundley

SALE AT PENNIES

TEAMS THAT TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE SALES. THE DOLLAR BINS. THE DOLLAR STORES. STRETCHED THE ALMIGHTY BUCK TO IMPROVE THEIR TEAM.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: Thought Seattle Seahawks were doomed last season getting rid of all the leftovers from the Legion of Boom. However they still made the playoffs. The hated Pete Carol knows how to construct a good roster. He built a new defense that was pretty good. He improved the running game on the offense.

This off season they signed back most of their own that were free agents. They added offensive lineman Mike Lupati from the Cardinals to protect Russell Wilson.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: I like the new coaching staff in Tampa. Bruce Arians as the new head coach. His defensive coordinator is a former Jets head coach and he was a very excellent defensive coordinator with the Cardinals, good ole Todd Bowls. First thing I see is the Buccaneers defense will improve even if it is the same cast of characters.

Fitzmagic is gone. Will Winston be able to play nice with uber drivers? The Buccaneers traded away DeSean Jackson. Sending the cancer back to where he originally came from in Philadelphia.  They picked up Breshad Perriman who did not want to be a a part of the Cleveland Browns once again as they brought in Beckham. He didn’t feel the love for Cleveland Rocks. Besides that move and a few resigning of their own, Tampa Bay’s pirate ship has been very quiet.

NEW YORK GIANTS: Not sure what the Giants are actually doing. They traded away Odell Beckham and did not get enough back in my opinion. They let Landon Collins bolt. They traded away another defensive player to improve their offensive line. Then they added defensive help from the Five & Dime store. However they signed Golden Tate to a pretty decent deal.

Last year when Odell Beckham was out with an injury, I thought the Giants offense was doing well. Adding to the offensive line to keep Eli Manning from taking hits is smart, getting Kevin Zeitler. They already have a slot receiver in Shepard. That’s why the Golden Tate signing baffles me. Seems like the Giants care more about their offense than defense. The Giants signed Antoine Bethea, Markus Golden and get Jabrili Peppers in a trade. They have lost impact players on defense and these guys will not make up for that.

LA RAMS: Looks like the Rams need penny pinching moves. Do they have enough money to bring back Suh to anchor the middle of that defensive line? Bringing in Eric Weddle from Baltimore helps improve their secondary, which was pretty good in the first place. Rams made it to the Superbowl. I’m not sure what they need exactly but I do know they need something else to improve that team. Perhaps they will solve their needs in the draft or improve on the fly, as they are a team that wheels and deals during the season.

The Rams waited and took advantage of the K-Mart blue light special and landed Clay Matthews Jr. from Green Bay. He once was thought of as Thor. Most think of him as Aaron Rodgers’ odd couple roommate on the State Farm commercials. Who will replace him in Green Bay? Maybe Nelson, who was cut from the Raiders, will cuddle with Rodgers again.I like this move for the Rams because Clay is going home and where he played college football is where the Rams play their home games. I think Wade Phillips will know how to use Matthews.

LA CHARGERS: Not much going in Charger Land. They’ve been relatively quiet. They resigned some of their own. They’ve been picking at the dollar bin. Found themselves a back up quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. Like they need one. Phillip Rivers takes every bloody snap anyways.

On defense, they added former Panther, Thomas Davis. I like that move because he can help what is already a pretty good defense. They let Tyrell Williams walk out the door to a division rival. I like how the offense rolled this year and taking away one of Rivers’ weapons is not a good idea. They could draft another wide out as it was a penny pinching move by the Chargers in the first place not to resign Williams.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: Colts coming off a very successful season where they made the playoffs. They even advanced to the second round. They have been quiet, too quiet. They resigned a few of their own. They plucked Carolina’s number one receiver, Devin Funchess, from counter by the cash register next to the magazines. That’s not saying much to be Carolina’s number one receiver. However you could say he had Cam Newton throwing to him, which maybe he might be a better weapon for Andrew Luck. It take two to tangle.

HOUSTON TEXANS: Texans coming off a season where they made the playoffs, only to be knocked out in the first round. Texans lost a few guys who bolted to other teams. Texans replaced those guys by finding deals in the dollar bins at the Walmart. They added Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Tashon Gipson from the Jaguars, and Bradley Roby. Three guys that could replace the guys that left. Not sure if they got better or worse with this team. Their biggest move was putting the tag on Clowney, making sure he did not get away.

DALLAS COWBOYS: Cowboys made the playoffs last season. They have signed their own back. The team added Jason Witten, who jumped in their Amazon cart, coming out of retirement. Perhaps he knew his announcing skills on Monday night football were not that good. Witten gives the Cowboys a much needed weapon on offense. If he can play like his old former self, this move can help this team, especially a guy who can get those hard first downs and move the chains. I think the Cowboys need to make a few more moves since they played in a very bad division. Not going to respect them like they are a shoe-in for the playoffs again this upcoming season. I like them adding Randall Cobb to replace Cole Beasley. They needed something in the slot. If Cobb can stay healthy and now with a new team, he will be determined to turn his career around. Gives Prescott another weapon with experience.

CHICAGO BEARS: The Bears are limited on the cash this off-season so they’ve been stocking up at Aldi for their needs.

By far their best move was kick returner/wide out Cordarrelle Patterson from the Evil Empire. Besides returning kickoffs and punts, you can insert him into your offense. Gives Coach Nagy another toy to his offense.

They replaced Amos and Calahan on defense with a couple budget buys. Buster Skrine from the Jets. I like the signing of Ha Ha Clinton Dix because he something to prove, especially to his former team the Packers.

Bears added another running back in Mike Davis. They had to cut their kicker last year for his double donking of the cross bars, especially in the playoffs. But that move is eating crucial salary cap space. Plus they still really have not addressed this occurring problem that has haunted them ever since they cut Robbie Gould.

TEAMS THAT HAVE DONE NOTHING TO IMPROVE THEMSELVES SO FAR THIS OFF SEASON

PITTSBURGH STEELERS: I used to think of the Steelers as a hard working, bring your lunch pail to the job, type of team. Guys who don’t complain about breaking a nail. They just rub some dirt on it and get back to work.

First thing I will say is the defense is no longer the steel curtain. Perhaps it is no longer even a shower curtain. Even a shower curtain with grime and holes in it. The head coach of the Steelers is Mike Tomlin who has defense in his blood. Not seeing it. Not seeing any improvements on this man’s expertise.

Not sure why Mike Tomlin is still the head coach. He once let what to do for the National Anthem, take his team away from beating a bad Chicago Bears team. Then the cry babies. Antonio Brown and the hold out Bell that has been eating away at this team for years. This thing goes deeper than those two yellow bellies. They have had disgruntled  people on the offensive side of the ball for years. Do they draft them that way? Can Mike Tomlin diffuse any situation? Obviously he can not put out a fire to save his life, even if he had a fire-hose to use. This is all on the Big Ben watch as well. Would this kind of shenanigans happen on Bill Cowher’s watch? Absolutely not. It’s about time the Steelers brass fire a coach for once. A head coach of a football team should not hold on to the job like they are the Pope.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS:This team right now is hot garbage. Alex Smith most likely will not be playing this season after suffering a horrible injury that could end his career. They then traded for Case Keenum, which Denver is paying most of that huge contract for the one year wonder. I’d rather go with Josh Johnson, who subbed in late in the season. Then they resigned Adrian, aka Spanky Peterson. Not sure he has enough gasoline left in the tank. He will need to be towed away to the junk yard at some point.

On defense they landed Collins as in Landon Collins from the Giants. They over paid for him. They lost a few of their own free agents on both sides of the ball. Perhaps the Texan Colt McCoy will get another shot with his six shooter starting behind center when everyone else is scalped and laying dead, skinned at high noon.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: NOT IMPRESSED. Patriots are coming off a season where they won the Superbowl. To me, I hope bad times at New England High are about to happen. Many of their own people have walked out of their own doors. Detroit is the newest New England. They traded for Michael Bennett, a cancer in the locker room, to replace Trey Flowers. They found Terrance Brooks from the Jets and Bruce Ellington from the Lions on the road being picked at by vultures. The Patriots fought them off and found them homes. Is GRONK coming back?  Looks bad right now. But the Evil Empire will come up with some kind of trade and draft well to fix their Death Star.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS: The Vikings are a team that was supposed to make it to the playoffs. They won a brand new quarterback in the off season. They are paying Kirk Cousins big money and they failed to make it to the playoffs. The defense did not look good as it once did when they made it to the NFC championship.

No action Jackson activity going on to improve the team either. They lost Sheldon Richardson. They almost lost Anthony Barr. They added Shamar Stephen from Seattle. Who is that? Not sure. We do know the rest of the division have been very busy bees.

MIAMI DOLPHINS: What are the Dolphins doing exactly? They have signed a few Patriots in corner back Eric Rolle and tight end Dwayne Allen. Not big names. You can say Allen has had some good years catching the ball. They let a few of their key players walk out the door. Then they traded their starting quarterback to Tennessee. Looks like they will be heading for a rebuild of some kind. Why the need for a veteran tight end, Dwayne Allen, if you’re trading all your assets?  Even Teddy Bridgewater went for a visit and perhaps could have been the starter. He turned the Dolphins down and headed back to the Saints to back up Brees. However Ryan Fitzpatrick finds another new team to start for. Just needs to play for the Patriots after the Dolphins to have played for everyone in the AFC East. Will he throw for 400 yards every games with a few picks? Probably the bridge quarterback for the new drafted quarterback. Patriots next season.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: I think the Chiefs are in trouble. This off season is a head scratcher. They cut Justin Huston and traded away Dee Ford and cut the heart and soul of their team ,their man Berry. Are Damien Wilson and Alex Okafor and Tyran Mathieu enough to replace those guys. Their defense was not that great last year. But they made some plays. I think their defense got worse.

On offense they lost their center. They added well traveled Carlos Hyde to the back field. Then their star receiver might be in trouble with the law. So far the feeling I have is, the sky is falling in Kansas City. The whole division improved and they took a few steps backwards.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: They finally cut ties with Blake Bortles. The owner finally got the naked pictures back from his former quarterback. Many high price defensive players have been cut. Many coaches were shown the door. Do not understand how Doug Marone is still the head coach. Maybe he has the naked pictures now.

They signed Nick Foles. Yes, St. Nick. This is a huge upgrade from what they had. Too much money invested in him. Not sure why Nick Foles chose the Jaguars, who does he have to throw to? Chris Conley, a guy no one ever heard of, a wide out from the Chiefs the Jags signed. Foles has a bipolar running back. They did improve the line with Cedric Ogbuehi. Again, Foles has no weapons. Plus Nick, can he play the whole year and be successful? I think this move will backfire for both sides.

CINCINNATI BENGALS: Bengals looking to return their old bumble selves. They have signed their own free agents back. They added an offensive lineman in John Miller. They brought in a corner back from the Giants in BW Webb.

The Bengals will be going in a different direction with a new coach. Long time coach Marvin Lewis who held on to his position like the Pope for too many years. The Cincinnati Reds have done way more in their off season than the Bengals.

CAROLINA PANTHERS: DO YOU HEAR CRICKETS?

Panthers added to their offensive line. Matt Paradis and Daryl Williams.

Panthers lost some key people. Cam Newton is still the team’s quarterback. I would not be dancing naked in the streets if I was a Panther fan.

ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons added some offensive pieces. You want your franchise quarterback protected at all costs. They’ve got two offensive linemen: Jamon Brown and James Carpenter. They added a back up running back in Kenjon Barner.

They had one of the worst defenses in the league last season and did not get anybody to help on that side of the ball. Their offense will have to carry them all year with the walking dead defense they have coming back.

BALTIMORE RAVENS: Ravens had one of the top defenses in the league last year. They lost some key guys on that unit. The Ravens brought in corner back, Justin Bethel. Then they landed Earl Thomas from Seattle, the last of that Legion of Boom defense. Earl is not a classy guy. Most of those Legion of Boom guys are just cancer to the locker room. Not enough to replace the manpower they lost.

On offense they signed running back Mark Ingram from the Saints. I like him only with someone else that can do well and share the carries. If he is my featured back, not a fan of this move. Besides they have no receivers. Their quarterback is the running man. The Ravens might as well run the old wishbone offense.

THE AAF POWER RANKINGS THE WILD SHAMROCK WAY

After five weeks of power rankings, we still have the Apollos at number one. However, we do have new people living under the stairs.

A legend has been made. Lots of close games in week five. Two games won on the foot of the kicker.

It was not Kathy Ireland, so get out of my head. Speaking of Ireland, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all. Please have a few too many Guinnesses and enjoy the power rankings in style. I know I did.

#1. ORLANDO APOLLOS (5-0) Ranking: Same

THE SHOW TIME AT THE APOLLO HAS A HIGHER RATING THAN THE BOOK OF MORMONS.

In the AAF it’s all about record over ratings. The Apollos are undefeated. The Salt Lake City book of Mormons has done poorly at the box office with only one win so far.

The Orlando success recipe.

Best Quarterback in the League.

Best Wide Receiver in the League.

Many star defensive players that stand out.

Sprinkle in a coach that has done this before in the USFL and you notice Steve Spurrier’s success so far in the AAF.

Can the Apollos be the the 1972 Miami Dolphins and go perfect the whole year? The Apollos look like they stand by themselves and the rest of the league is all jumbled together.

#2. SAN ANTONIO COMMANDERS (3-2) Ranking: Up one spot

Do not let the score fool you last week in the Commanders’ victory over the Hot shots 29-25. Commanders let off the gas in the second half when the Hot Shots fought back in this one but came up short. This game was over at half time. I’m not a guy I think, to ease on down the road with a big lead if I was the coach. I can see playing it safe, but Commanders showed the prevent defense that I guess you could say worked because they still held on. Too close for my comfort zone. The Commanders’ defense excelled in the first half with a pick six TOUCH DOWN. They forced a fumble and made things very tough on the Hot Shots offense. Hot Shots offense came on fire in garbage time in this contest. Logan Woodside was airing it out with the bomb, a perfect strike hitting his receiver right on stride for an easy touchdown.  Logan is prone to make mistakes in every contest. He is never gun shy about throwing a pass. He is getting better each week and many quarterbacks in this league can’t say that. This San Antonio team this year in the power rankings have been up and down in the middle floors, avoiding the basement and the pent house on top of the power rankings pyramid. I think they are ready to continue their rise.

#3.SAN DIEGO FLEET (3-2) Ranking: Up one spot.

The Fleet had the invasion of the Book of Mormons invade their coast line. It was one of the best games all year. The Fleet had the lead because of their defense. They scored two touchdowns on defense. They forced quite a few turnovers in this one. Salt Lake City somehow rallied back and took the lead with the two point conversion with less than a minute to go. The Mike Martz offense has to go with his starter from week one in which he was taken out and replaced by Phillip Nelson. Nelson got hurt so now the team has to rely on Michael Bercovici that week one starter. The former Arizona State University star. The Fleet have the number one rushing attack. The Stallions have the number one rushing defense. Defense prevailed there. Most of the game Bercovici was moving the ball down field and settling for field goals. Last minute of the game he came up with a bomb that was caught to set up the Fleet for the winning field goal. The Fleet went on to win this thriller.  I give Michael Bercovici credit, as he reminded me of Captain Rex Kramer in the movie Airplane. Getting mauled by Hari Krishnas and other activists begging for money. Instead this game had the Book of Mormons. Like the Captain karate and judo chopping his way through all these religious people begging for money to save the day, and get to the tower to help guide the airplane to the ground.   Bercovici used his arm to get through all the door bell ringers.

#4.BIRMINGHAM IRON (3-2) Ranking: Down two spots

This explains what the Birmingham Iron have been going through. They have fallen hard the last two games. The Apollos stepped all over the Iron. Like a bully on the playground giving your kid a purple nurple and noogies. The Iron defense looked human against the Apollos offense. The Iron switch at quarterback created a flicker. Keith Price came in and looked good on a few drives. He did not have enough to prevail against the top team in the league. Meanwhile is Luis Perez going back to his day job, bowling?

Not sure if they have YouTube videos on how to play quarterback on the bench. Will this team continue to free fall into next week?

#5. ATLANTA LEGENDS (2-3) Ranking: Up  three spots

We have waited and finally Atlanta is definitely legendary. It took weeks but the Legends finally have their coaching staff in place. Since Ken Zampese came in as the new offensive coordinator, this team has been rolling.  Aaron Murray came in at quarterback and the Legends have won their first two games. The offense looks crisper.

The Legends defense made a huge play at the end of the game last week in which they  forced a turnover versus the Express. Then the Legends drove the ball down field and won the game with a field goal. This is the first time the Legends have been out of the basement of our power rankings this year.

#6.MEMPHIS EXPRESS (1-4) Ranking: Down one spot

Just when you think the Express have turned the corner. After coming off your first win last week you find yourself in a battle in Atlanta. It’s a tie game. Your quarterback is not Christian Hackenberg. Your new gunslinger, Zach Mettenburger, has given your team life.

It’s the last minute of the game and your team is driving. Zach makes a throw which goes through the hands of his receiver and the old tip drill in football benefits the Legends as they get the interception. The Legends drive down the field and kick the field goal to end the one game winning streak of the Express. Oh, the humanity. Can the Express dig themselves out of a big hole in the second half of the season?

#7.SALT LAKE CITY STALLIONS (1-4) Ranking: Down one spot

The Stallions by far should have a better record than they have. This team has the best run defense. They have the best pass rusher in Karter Schult. On offense, Josh Woodrum is one of the better quarterbacks in this league. Woodrum got his bell rung. Came back into the game and led the team back from two scores down. The Stallions should have never been down as they turnover the ball four times. Two of them were scores for the Fleet. The Stallions then took the lead with 49 seconds left in the game. To have given the ball away that many times and still be able to take the lead in that game, you know you have some things that are working well for you. Then the defense let the Fleet march down the field with less than a minute to see another game get away from them.  With this loss, these Stallion book of Mormons might be seeking answers in your neighborhood at some point. When that bell rings at your house, be sure to hide under the bed. Don’t open the door to them. We have some nifty signs to put on your front door to stop the Book of Mormons from bothering you.

#8.ARIZONA HOT SHOTS (2-3) Ranking: Down one spot

Many experts thought the Hot Shots were going to be one of the best teams in the AAF. Those three experts are now covering badminton in Zimbabwe for ESPN 999. The Hot Shots came out of the gate blazing.

TEMPE, ARIZONA – MARCH 10: Scooby Wright #58 of the Arizona Hotshots tackles Kenneth Farrow II #20 of the San Antonio Commanders in the third quarter during the Alliance of American Football game at Sun Devil Stadium on March 10, 2019 in Tempe, Arizona. (Photo by Jennifer Stewart/AAF/Getty Images)

The wheels have been coming off on the Hot Shot Mystery Van. Scooby Wright is the heart and soul of the Hot Shot defense but the rest of the mystery team is MIA. The Hot Shots continue to come into each game cold and always playing from behind. They made it a much closer game last week versus the Commanders. However, they did their scoring in garbage time.

THE DOG HEADING TO THE POUND

Cleveland Browns fans in the “Dawg Pound” gear up for an NFL pre-season football game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

The biggest dog in the NFL is heading to the pound. The same dog pound that has lost its bark for years, watching nothing but crap on the field, year after year. The same dog pound that had a parade not too long ago for their perfect season. The same season they lost every single game. The Cleveland Browns have added Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants. The Browns will need to make sure they have plenty of rabies shots on hand. Beckham is a pure junkyard dog, foaming at the mouth, type of player. He is a wide receiver that will score on any given play and take it to the house. He may hump the goal post once or twice in a game, even on a bad day. He may even urinate on an official. In any pound or in any park, he might be the best doggone receiver in the game, and he is a Brown.

The Cleveland Browns have been to hell and back. The city of Cleveland watched their Browns sneak out of town in the wee hours of the morning and move to Baltimore, years ago . The city and fans fought like hell to at least get the Browns name back. Years later the NFL gave Cleveland back their team that should have never left in the beginning. They had their team back but they could never figure out how to put a quality team on the field. They drafted guys like Johnny Football and passed on guys like Carson Wentz. Finally they got it right at quarterback. They finally found their leader behind center in a man named Baker Mayfield. The number one draft pick in 2018. This time the Browns were not passing on a guy that could lead their team to new heights. Not just a few wins. Beyond that. He has shown that on the field already. A leader with loads of talent.

This off season the man behind getting Baker Mayfield is the new GM of the Browns, John Dorsey. The Browns GM has been a very busy man revamping the Browns roster and coaching staff. His efforts paid off in the regular season when the Browns were very competitive. They almost had a winning season. They almost made it to the 500 mark with a 7-8-1 record. Those seven wins are more than they had in many years combined. This off season he added a dog at running back. A dog that likes to push women around. Kareem Hunt is that dog. He will be suspended a few games for breaking his leash and attacking a female. He will play for the Browns at some point. Now you add Beckham with Hunt and the playmakers you already assembled, you might have an offense with weapons of mass destruction like the Kansas City Chiefs. Dorsey swindled the Giants for Beckham for two draft picks. A first rounder and a third rounder. They also gave the Giants, safety Jabrili Peppers. This is not a king’s ransom for an elite play maker like Beckham.

Not saying the Browns are barking their way to the Superbowl. They are closer than ever. John Dorsey has put together a high octane offense this off season that will scare lots of defenses. Let’s not forget about the Browns defense which is pretty good. Then you look at the Browns division. The Bengals are backing their way back to Bumble status. The Ravens are going with the running man at quarterback. One dimensional offense especially when all their receivers have left town. The Ravens defense lost a few key players. The Steelers got rid of all their crybaby play-makers. Right now if the season started today, I have the Browns winning this division. Browns just need to keep their dogs on the field and they should be good to go. The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is always in the mood to put a bad dog to sleep for good. Ask Colin Kaepernick.
