DA BEARS ADD A GAME WRECKER IN DEAL WITH THE TITANS

The Chicago Bears are putting all their cards on the table as they are in for a potential Superbowl or bust with a move they made with the Tennessee Titans. The Bears acquire a game wrecker for their defense in 29 year old former first round pick defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons. Some may say the Bears traded the cow for some beans in this deal. It will cost the Bears two first round picks along with a 4th rounder to complete this trade between the Bears and Titans. The Bears will get 8 year veteran Simmons along with a 2028 5th round draft pick. The Titans will get the Bears 1st round 2027 and ’28 pick along with 2027 4th round pick. The Bears are 5-2 & seeking a Superbowl while the 1-6 Titans are looking to turn around their misfortunes with the draft.

Jeffrey Simmons was originally drafted by the Titans back in 2019 in the first round 19th overall from Mississippi State. In 7 games this season, Simmons for the last place Titans has tallied 4 sacks and 20 solo tackles along with a forced fumble. Six of those solo tackles were for loss of yardage. Simmons also tallied up 9 QB hits in the first 7 games of the season. His career numbers Simmons is a force in the middle of the line as he has tallied up 46.5 sacks with 239 solo tackles. He has been involved in 414 tackles in his career. He has forced 9 fumbles. He has 72 tackles in his career for a loss of yardage.

He has 96 total career hits on the QB. Simmons’ stats show you he can kill everyone on any given Sunday on defense. In 8 seasons he has made 4 Pro-Bowls.

This is the first time in the NFL during the common draft era which was in 1967, a defensive tackle has been dealt for two first round draft picks. These kinds of trades will either get a General Manager fired or if their team benefits from the deal, it will make someone in the front office a very wealthy person. Ryan Poles is playing high stake poker here & many experts have mixed feelings about this deal right now for the Bears. When you give up draft capital, especially number 1 picks, it could certainly set your franchise back a few seasons. The Bears did a similar deal back in 2018 when they acquired Khalil Mack from the Raiders for a King’s ransom. That move made the Bears defense a smashing hit that season under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, one of the best in the league. The Bears made the post-season. It was a double doink off the uprights by kicker Cody Parkey in the wild card game versus the Eagles that January. Which ended the Bears’ 2018 season. The Bears would not get back to the post-season until 2020, but they were one and done that year. Eventually Mack was traded again to the Chargers where he is presently still playing for the bolts. What is the difference now and then? The Bears then had Mitch Trubisky as their quarterback. Now they actually have a QB in Caleb Williams. The Bears have one of the best offenses in the league this season with the Ice Man Williams behind center. Plus Williams is still playing under his rookie contract. Remember when the Seattle Seahawks added pieces to their team when Russell Wilson was under his rookie deal as they made two Superbowl appearances and won 1 of them. The Legion of Boom defense was a big part while Seattle won a Superbowl with Wilson.

The Bears D is currently one of the best at third down defense. Adding a guy like Jeffrey Simmons makes those early downs problems for the opponent. Where opponents will need more yards to establish the first down. Simmons will improve the Bears’ run defense. His presence caves in the middle of the opponent’s offensive line. He will demand more blockers which frees up other Bear defenders. The Bears added Montez Sweat in 2023 as one of their edge rushers. They also added veteran Grady Jarrett, former Falcons defensive tackle, to the mix. Jarrett has tallied up 38 sacks in 12 seasons. With Simmons added to this defense, Jarrett along with Sweat and others will certainly capitalize. This is a move that certainly improves Dennis Allen’s defense the rest of the season. If the Bears defense is better with one of the potent offenses in the NFL, the Bears could find their way into the Super Bowl representing the NFC.

We know trades in any sport are a poker game. Some GM’s have made a great living pulling off big deals and fleecing your opponent at the same time. The Titans will have 2 first round picks in back-to-back years in ’27 and ’28. You can say for Ryan Poles those picks the Bears gave the Titans will be late first rounders because you have to expect Chicago to make it to the post-season. If the Bears do not make it to the post-season and this trade becomes a bust, then heads will roll in Chicago. Jeffrey Simmons is heading to the age of 30 and is under contract through 2030. You will have to pony up for Caleb Williams at some point with an extension. The Bears already ponied up and gave the right offensive tackle Darnell Wright a 4 year 116 million extension. If the Bears don’t win a Superbowl with Simmons they may lose key players in the future due to salary cap restraints. Without draft capital in the first round, your GM has to hit players in the later rounds. Right now this trade looks great for both teams. Simmons had 11 sacks last year and could be the game wrecker Ben Johnson has only dreamed about. If this defense get that much better, Johnson’s offense will just become more explosive than ever. Down the line this trade could be cloudy with meatballs for the Bears. For the Titans, it should help them build around Cam Ward who is in his second year as the team’s quarterback. If he’s still part of the future as well in a upcoming draft filled with QB talent. Right now it all depends on what happens next for each team to see how this deal will unfold in the future.
